Biltong as Keto Snack
One of my favorite keto snacks is biltong. Biltong is a traditional food, as are the jerky recipes that are popular today. I particularly like biltong from Canada, as it is so rich in flavour that it’s hard to imagine you can get that flavor from anything else. Biltong is also very similar to the taste of a high-quality steak.

Biltong is not as hard to find as you might think, though. It does not necessarily require special ingredients to make great biltong. Most stores carry some sort of jerky already in the freezer that they will let you take home and use. If you’re short on time or are looking to save some money on your purchase, buying some biltong off the store shelf may be the best option.
A good biltong recipe will include ham hocks, some ham hocks, ground up venison, or other meats that you would normally use for meatloaf. I especially enjoy jerky recipes that include venison as the primary ingredient. The meat from these animals has a lot more fat than most other types of meat, so it cooks faster and is easier to cut into slices. There’s also some protein in the fat, which means that you don’t end up having to use a lot of the fat when you cook the biltong.
Some of the best biltong recipes you can find online will come with directions and even videos for you to follow. This makes making the snack really easy. You don’t have to worry about finding something to marinate or marinade your biltong, either. Many recipes include instructions for either adding olive oil to your marinade or putting it on your grill for a few minutes to get some flavour to the meat. Once you get your biltong marinated, you can just pop it on the grill or fry it on your pan until it is ready.
If you are going to use meat from your meats, it is important that you marinate the meat for at least 48 hours. before preparing it for use. There are a number of different products out there that you can use to marinate your meat, but I always prefer a mixture of spices and hot sauce. with some type of liquid like chicken broth added to keep the flavors in the marinade as natural as possible.
Once you have all of your biltong marinated, you need to decide what kind of jerky you’re going to make. Usually you will want to use ham, beef, bison, or venison as well as some other meat. The idea with jerky is that the flavor is very similar to beef or bison, so you can get the same taste and texture from using them, but you may need to add some additional spices to give it the taste of an actual jerky. The best kind is always to buy the small, boneless, flat cuts of meat and let the fat completely soak through before cooking.
A common mistake many people make with their biltong is leaving out the marinade altogether. There is a difference in taste between jerky made with beef fat and biltong made with venison fat, so it is important that you take this step. into account. It is important to note that most jerky that you buy already has some salt and pepper, so it doesn’t take much to get it right, but if you want to add more spices, it is always worth testing to see how it tastes when it is marinated.
